You Can't Do What They Do

Dwan Riggins

You can’t do what they do.

Honestly, sometimes, I get really frustrated with being held to a high standard by God. There’s no pressure but it’s the “pain” of discipline  (Hebrews 12:11) and self-control that drives my frustration. It’s the tension between my spirit and my flesh. Sometimes, I want to treat them like they treat me! Sometimes I want to hook up. Sometimes I want to take short cuts. I’ve been told, “Well Dwan, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Be ‘free’. God knows your heart. Repent later. You’re under grace.” Even my own thoughts try to justify and rationalize. But still  …No.

When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required. Luke 12:48. Can God trust you?

Comfort in and the casualness of carnal thinking is a slow drift that will cause us to lower His standards and begin fashioning ourselves after the world. True freedom isn’t based on doing what we want to do, but rather being yielded to what God has instructed us to do, because He set us free. Please don’t confuse God’s discipline with the absence of freedom.

And so …I’ve settled in my heart:

-You can’t treat them the way they treat you.

-You can’t respond the way they respond.

-You can’t post what they post.

-You can’t cheat the system like they do.

-You can’t go where they go.

-You can’t indulge like they do.

At some point, we’ve got to stop using, “God knows my heart” as an excuse and start being responsible with what God has given us. He requires more of us.
